Et voilà Cholula ! Sur la pyramide de Cholula se trouve une église. En fait de pyramide, on ne voit pas grand chose, si ce n’est une colline bien verte. L’intérêt de Cholula, c’est Cholula. Très belle petite bourgade qui vaut à coup sûr le détour si vous êtes à Puebla ! Sacrés cachotiers, les habitants du coin !

 And voilà Cholula! On the pyramid of Cholula, there’s a church. Actually you don’t see much of a pyramid at all: it’s a green hill. The main point of going to Cholula is Cholula itself. Nice try though! Cholula is a beautiful small town, that’s definitely worth visiting if you are in Puebla!

Excursion à Cholula depuis Puebla. Le bus vaut là encore le détour. Les vitres sont recouvertes d’un film jaune qui donne au paysage un aspect très Steven Soderbergh (voir “Traffic“), ce qui me rappelle le fait que Mexico apparaît dans les films américains presque toujours comme  un enfer policier ou un repère tiers-mondiste de brigands liés au trafic de drogue. Allez, mesdames, messieurs d’Hollywood, on fait ses valises et on fait des films plus diversifiés sur le pays.

Day trip to Cholula from Puebla. The bus is again worth mentioning. The windows are covered with a yellow plastic film, which gives the landscape a nice Steven Soderbergh touch (see “Traffic“). This reminds me of the fact that in American movies, Mexico is almost always presented as a hellhole, where police officers rob you blind or as a drug infested third world country. Travel, you Hollywood people!

Après avoir passé une semaine à Mexico city, j’ai opté pour une petite excursion à Puebla vu que tout le monde me disait que la ville était “muy bonita”. Oui bon, une partie de la ville est effectivement muy bonita, mais lorsqu’on arrive à la gare routière, on a plutôt un choc culturel. Ce quartier-là est franchement moche et bruyant. Le centre-ville en revanche a beaucoup de belles bâtisses coloniales de type espagnol avec cour intérieure, plafond surélevé… ou alors des petites trouvailles architecturales. Je suis venue avec la compagnie de bus ADO mais je ne peux pas la recommander. Elle n’accepte pas les CB étrangères et à Puebla son personnel n’est pas des plus agréables.

After one week in Mexico City, I decided to visit Puebla since everybody told me that it was “muy bonita”. Well, part of the city is indeed muy bonita, but the area around the bus station will challenge your imagination to put things mildly. Ok, it’s downright ugly and noisy. The historical center, however, has many beautiful colonial buildings with Spanish-style courtyards, high ceilings … You can also find some modern architectural gems. I traveled to Puebla by bus with ADO but I can’t recommend the company. ADO doesn’t accept foreign credit cards and its staff is not exactly customer friendly.
